Hardin-Simmons University and the Abilene Independent School District have joined forces to host a long-standing tradition. In 1952, Hardin-Simmons began hosting a high school girls invitational basketball tournament under the direction of its founder, Dr. Otho M. Polk, professor of physical education and recreation. In 1985, Hardin-Simmons renamed the tournament in honor of its late founder. Abilene Independent School District initiated the Key City Invitational Girls Basketball Tournament in 1975 and enjoyed success for many years. Because of scheduling difficulties, the two tournaments fell on the same dates. In order to eliminate the competition between Hardin-Simmons and the Abilene ISD, the two institutions decided to combine their efforts to produce one of the finest high school girls invitational tournaments in the state. The tournament was henceforth known as the Polk-Key City Girls Basketball Classic and dedicated to the memory of Dr. Otho M. Polk, who not only taught at Hardin-Simmons for 51 years, but also served as tournament director 30 years. In 2014, the tournament added the Wylie Independent School District to this unique partnership between a university and two school districts. The Polk family continues to support the tournament through gracious financial donations. The mission of the Polk-Key City Girls Basketball Classic is to promote a quality girls basketball tournament in a way that involves the community and entire Big Country.
